The legend goes that, during ‘ Snana Purnima, the bathing festival of Jagannath Temple. This art is very old & is closely related to Lord Jagannath. The tradition dates back to 12th century A.D.when it started with the painting of the Divine Trinity ( Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra & goddess Subhadra) for the purpose of displaying before the pilgrims for the period of 15 days during “Anasara”. We learnt a lot of things from the junior artist. The them/ subject matter of the Pattachitra is the source of Sri Jagannath cult & Ramleela, Krishnaleela, mythological, religious stories. Besides Pattachitra, we were shown arts on Palm-leave engraving, Tasar, Silk painting, Tribal Arts, masks, stone idols, papier mache, sculptures, wooden toys, etc The artists are called ‘ chitrakars.’.Junior Mahapatra acknowledged that his father is the Guru & he displayed a few items drawn by his father. So “Pattachitra” means painting on a piece of cloth. What is a Pattachitra? Patta means canvas, cloth, screen or veil & Chitra means picture. His son displayed the arts & started to explain the making, showing the various crafts & lastly he started to draw on a Patta (canvas) very earnestly. We entered in one such art center, namely Shree Babaji Pattachitra Centre, owned by Sri Bishnukinkar Mahapatra, a govt. It appeared to me that they would display their art/ creations to us. We were welcomed by each & every artisan to pay a visit to his center. As the day was coming to an end, we stopped further going inside & found artisans’showrooms on both the sides of the road stretched deep inside. At last we reached the village Malatipatpur, nearest village in Raghurajpur. A sign board was there for the direction to the tourists. From Chandanpur market, we took right turn along a road towards our destination & reached at a point when we again took right turn on a narrow road. Raghurajpur is only 14 km away from Puri on NH 203, near Chandanpur. In the afternoon we decided to visit this craft village on our way back to Puri. On 20th November, we first visited Konark via the Ramchandi Temple & Chandrabhaga beach. Most of the Indian tourists are more interested to pilgrimage & interested in beach & sea, but to me Raghurajpur, a nearby village in Puri district a real attraction. During the course of conversation we expressed our desire to visit Raghurajpur, one of the few heritage crafts village recognized by the government of India, where all its natives are artisans, & family tradition. After breakfast, we visited the OTDC office on beach road & discussed the itinerary & booked seats for Chilika. We paid our homage to Lord Jagannath in the early morning. ![]() November is the best season to visit in Puri. The first attraction was, of course, the Jagannath Temple, followed by the beach & local sightseeing & next to excursions to nearby worth seeing places. This time I made my itinerary for Puri visit in a different way. ![]()
